A world-premier, join The Idea of North on a journey of vocal harmony throughout the centuries. Think Gregorian Chant, Bach, Madrigals and the Andrew Sisters and topped off with some contemporary harmony-laden classics.

But first, discard your preconceptions of what you may experience in this deep dive into the history of vocal harmony. The Idea of North have finely-tuned their good old-fashioned self-deprecating Australian charm and will lure you into learning about five centuries of vocal music without you even noticing. Delve into the golden era of the Baroque, stroll through the age of enlightenment, sway across the velvety jazz era and bop along to the more recent era of pop and rock – but none of it is as you have ever heard before!

With copious amounts of “wit, charm and breath-taking musical virtuosity” (The Adelaide Advertiser), The Idea of North will demonstrate their “impeccable standard of musicianship” (The Melbourne Age) in this one night only of vocal harmony histrionics - a musical experience you’ll remember for years.

Multi ARIA Award-winning vocal group The Idea of North returns to the Princess Theatre to showcase their most recent and best iteration yet.

You’ll hear songs you know and songs you don’t, you’ll luxuriate in the kaleidoscope of feels this group awakens in its audiences. The group’s repertoire, sound and musical expression makes your experience of what these five singers can do with only the human voice even more incredible.

"Audiences have been treated to the vocal play of world-class a cappella outfit The Idea of North on many occasions over the years, but never quite like this" The Advertiser

So what is The Idea of North? In short, a quintet of musicians, serious about their music without taking themselves too seriously. With two ARIA awards under their collective belt, a significant local and international fan base, and a wonderful back-catalogue of over 10 albums, it would seem that despite their uniqueness, people are getting better at describing The Idea of North to their friends. You may have heard and enjoyed the CDs, but the best stuff actually happens live and can't be truly felt as ones and zeros, no matter how fast your internet connection is.

The Idea of North is a world class a cappella quintet, who are serious about their music without taking themselves too seriously. Now with the incredible Kai Kitamura on vocal percussion, Australia's most highly-awarded and best-loved contemporary a cappella group perform with a distinct sound and style that crosses many musical genres including jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical and comedy.

For the first time, City Recital Hall will be presenting a full length performance in which the group will explore vocal harmony throughout the centuries. Think Gregorian Chant, Bach, Madrigals and the Andrew Sisters and topped off with some contemporary harmony-laden classics.

The Idea of North has always been renowned for their exceptional ability to connect musically and emotionally with an audience. They take songs people know and songs they don’t and tell the stories through their enviably imaginative and arresting vocal arrangements – all without touching an instrument.

Although their instrumentation is all voices, this is far from the point of the show. The Idea of North will help you forget there are no instruments with their exceptional delivery of their wonderfully created repertoire, their relaxed and easy rapport with the audience, and the depth of their connection to the stories they sing. If you think you know the limits of what the human voice can create, then hearing and experiencing this astounding group will make you think again.

Presented in association with Musica Viva.
