This show, presented by Australia's undisputed masters of contemporary vocal harmony will impact you in a significant way. The beautiful St Peter's Cathedral and its audiences have witnessed the amazing voices of this group soar, intermingle and dance around the historic arches of the cathedral's ceiling for the last nine years. Now a stalwart of the Adelaide Fringe, 'Ballads by Candlelight' has understandably become one of the Fringe's most popular and memorable musical experiences. A previous winner of the Fringe's 'Best Music' award, this show will take you through the gamut of emotions - you'll laugh, cry, ponder, empathise and hope, as The Idea of North leads you through a beautifully curated repertoire of moving ballads. This is one show that will stay with you for a long time. Presented by: The Idea of North

The Idea of North are entirely deserved of their reputation as Australia's most awarded, best loved and longest running contemporary vocal group. This multi-ARIA Award-winning ensemble will astound and move with their incredible arrangements, flawless harmonies and dry, deadpan Aussie sense of humour. You'll not only experience world-class a cappella singing, but such is the group's down-to-earth nature, you'll also leave feeling as though you've know each member of the group for years. Since forming originally in 1993, there have been only a few changes to the line up over the years, but each time the group seems to improve their sound, their blend, their musicianship, and now, The Idea of North is in it's most exciting and versatile incarnation yet. Simply not to be missed.

Festival 2018 presents: The Idea of North

The Idea of North is and has been Australia's premier contemporary a cappella ensemble for many years.

As simple a descriptor that is, what you will actually experience at a concert of The Idea of North is more complex. The group's exceptional ability to connect musically and emotionally with an audience is what really sets them apart. They take songs you know and songs you don't, and tell the stories through their enviably imaginative and arresting vocal arrangements - all without touching an instrument.

The group has been duly recognised in its time, with international recording and performance awards, as well as two ARIA awards back here in Australia - it is a sight and a sound to behold. Now a quintet with the addition of the incredible vocal percussionist Kai Kitamura, The Idea of North is in its most exciting iteration to date.

Originally developed by Dr. Catherine Crock to reduce stress and anxiety felt by both patients and their families in hospitals, the Hush music collection transforms the environment through the use of carefully curated music from some of Australia’s foremost musicians and talents, and is now played in hospitals, homes and shared spaces across the globe.

Hush 16 sees a new and exciting addition to the collection with collaboration between renowned Australian composer, Elena Katz-Chernin, multiple ARIA winning award singer-songwriter Lior, and the Idea of North.

Not only that, but Hush 16's lyrics were inspired by stories of young cancer patients and other children.

Questions posed about their lives spawned responses filled with humour, wonder, excitement and surprising wisdom. From these conversations grew a collection of music that conveys the children’s feelings, hopes and dreams in a way that resonates equally with adult listeners.
